Lenten Fasting

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics.
For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meatless meal, as well as two smaller portions that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
What many Catholics fail to realize is that even on Fridays outside of Lent the divine law binds all the Christian faithful to do some penance each in his or her own way. On the Fridays outside of Lent, there is the option of either abstaining from meat or doing some other penitential act.
Pastors and parents are to ensure that even those who by reason of their age are not bound by the law of fasting and abstinence, are taught the true meaning of penance.
